Is the Google digital marketing certificate enough?

What the Google, HubSpot and Meta certificates prove, what they cost, and how to use them alongside a course.

Quick answer: The Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate costs $49 a month on Coursera, about $294 at its suggested six month pace, and is worth collecting. Use it alongside a structured course. 20 Minute Marketing adds hands on lessons and a portfolio brief: short courses from $79, Essentials $499, paid once, with 12 months access.

20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide. We think the certificates and a course work best together, and here is why.

What the Google certificate and other platform credentials do better

  • Low cost or free. The Google certificate costs about $294 at the suggested pace, and Skillshop foundational certifications and HubSpot Academy cost nothing [1] [4] [5].
  • A credit recommendation. The Google certificate carries an ACE recommendation of up to 9 college credits, which some colleges accept [1]. Ours carries none.
  • Career help in the US. Google says US graduates get CareerCircle coaching and access to an employer consortium of over 150 US companies [2].
  • The platform owner issued them. A Google Ads certification comes from Google, and Meta's exams are proctored through Pearson VUE [6]. An employer who runs those platforms knows exactly what they cover.

Why we recommend collecting them alongside a course

Most platform certificates prove you understand one company's tools or one program's syllabus. They do not always give you a finished piece of work to show.

A structured course fills that gap. Ours teaches the channels in sequence in lessons of about 20 minutes, with tutor support, and each course ends with a practice brief you can put in a portfolio. The certificates then back up what your portfolio shows.

A simple plan: course plus certificates

  • Learning Google Ads? Take our Google Ads course ($149, 12 lessons), then sit the free Google Ads certifications on Skillshop.
  • Learning SEO? Take our Search Engine Optimization course ($149, 32 lessons) and keep the audit and keyword map from its practice brief for your portfolio.
  • Starting from scratch? Take Essentials ($499) for the foundations, add the free HubSpot Digital Marketing certification (about 3 hours), and take the Google certificate if you want its credit recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google digital marketing certificate or a course better?

For most people, the best answer is both. The Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate is low cost, carries a brand employers know and an ACE credit recommendation, and is worth collecting. 20 Minute Marketing adds hands on lessons across every channel and a practice brief for your portfolio: self paced, paid once from $79 to $999, with 12 months access, tutor support, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion. Start with Essentials or find the right course for you.

Is this course accredited?

No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not an accredited institution. Our courses are not accredited by any accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education, they do not carry college credit, and they have not been evaluated for an ACE credit recommendation.

Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially people starting out. It is also slow: an accredited program changes its curriculum through formal review, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.

If you need college credit or a degree, a community college or university program is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.

Is the Google digital marketing certificate enough to get a job?

On its own it shows you have studied Google's program, which is useful. In our view most hiring managers also want to see that you can do the work, which is what a portfolio shows. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says market research analysts typically need a bachelor's degree, so a certificate and a portfolio help you compete but do not replace a degree where an employer asks for one.

How much does the Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate cost?

Coursera charges $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7 day free trial. Coursera suggests 6 months at 10 hours a week, which is about $294 in total, and Google says many learners finish in three to six months. It is also included in Coursera Plus, which costs $59 a month or $399 a year.

Does the Google certificate give college credit?

Coursera says learners can earn an ACE recommendation of up to 9 college credits. Whether a college accepts it is up to that college. Our courses carry no credit recommendation.

Are Google, HubSpot and Meta certifications free?

Google says its foundational Skillshop certifications continue to be available free of charge, and that some professional exams will require a fee in future. HubSpot Academy's Digital Marketing certification is free and takes about 3 hours. Meta's certification exams are paid: an associate exam voucher costs $99 and a professional exam voucher costs $150 through Pearson VUE.
