Pathways: Changing careers | Choosing what to study | Upskilling at work | Compare your options
Quick answer: For a career in marketing, a bachelor's degree is the typical route, and a community college can be a low cost start toward one. 20 Minute Marketing is a low cost way to try the work first or add current platform skills: self paced online, paid once, Essentials $499 (over 50 lessons), 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee.
20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and recommends its own courses for some learners. Here is why, and where other options fit better.
Is this for me?
This suits you if
- You are finishing high school or already in college and weighing a degree, a community college certificate, a bootcamp or a self paced online course.
- You want to find out whether you like marketing work before you commit years and thousands of dollars to it.
- You are studying marketing or business and want the platform skills your classes may not cover.
- You are a parent helping someone choose, and you want the costs and the limits stated plainly.
This is not the right fit if
- You need college credit or a degree. A community college or university gives you those. We do not.
- You want campus life, lectures and classmates. A college program gives you those.
- You need federal student aid. It can only be used for an eligible degree or certificate program, and our courses are not one.
What employers usually ask for
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for market research analysts, with no work experience in a related occupation required [1]. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, says of market research analysts and marketing specialists: "Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not" [2].
In plain terms: a degree is the usual route, and our courses do not replace one. A course and a portfolio help you find out whether you like the work and give you something to show, whichever route you take.
What you will be able to do
- Explain how search, social, email and paid ads fit together, in plain words.
- Run a basic SEO check and set up Google Search Console.
- Plan social media content for a brand and measure it.
- Write and schedule an email campaign.
- Plan a small paid search campaign without spending money.
- Audit a brand online and write a 90 day plan.
Essentials, the foundations path: You will be able to audit a brand's digital presence and write a 90 day marketing plan across search, social and email, which is the first task most employers and first clients hand a new marketer.
How long it takes
Lessons take about 20 minutes each, so they fit around classes, a part time job or exams. Essentials has over 50 lessons, about 18 hours in total, or about four months at three lessons a week. Deluxe has 100 lessons and Expert over 150. Short courses have 12 to over 30 lessons. Every course comes with 12 months access from the date of purchase.

Federal student aid and college credit
Federal student aid. To get federal student aid, you must be enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program [10]. Our courses are not one, so federal aid cannot be used for them. Not every college certificate qualifies either: UCLA Extension says "Federal Financial Aid is not available" for its digital marketing certificate [7]. Ask a college's financial aid office about the program you want. At $499, paid once, most learners do not need a loan for our courses.
Credit recommendations. The Google certificate carries an ACE recommendation of up to 9 college credits [8]. The American Council on Education says actual credit awarded is solely at the discretion of the college or university [11], so ask the college you plan to attend.
A combination often works best
- Before college: spend $499 on Essentials to find out whether you enjoy the work, then choose your major or certificate with more confidence.
- During college: add one short course, such as Google Ads or SEO, for the hands on platform skills your classes may not cover, and build a portfolio piece for your first internship or job applications.
- Alongside free certificates: collect the Google and HubSpot certificates as you go. They sit well next to a portfolio.
For parents: why it costs less, and what it is not
It costs less because it is self paced. There is no campus, no cohort to run and no live class schedule, so the price covers the lessons, the practice brief, tutor support and updates when the platforms change.
What it is not: it is not a degree, it is not live classes and it is not a job guarantee. What it is: lessons updated when the platforms change, a portfolio piece your child can show, a Certificate of Completion and a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase (terms).

What you finish with
When you finish a course you receive a Certificate of Completion, which records completion of a self paced online course. It is not a degree, diploma, college credit or professional license, and it claims nothing more than that.
What you can show an employer or client is the work itself: the portfolio piece you build from the course's practice brief.
Every course ends with a portfolio brief
You do not need a business, a website or an ad budget of your own. Each course ends with a practice brief on an obviously fictional business, and you finish with a piece of work you can show an employer or a first client. Present it as a practice project, never as work for a real client.
Essentials
Digital Presence Audit and 90 Day Plan for The Wattle Spoon, a fictional cafe: an audit, a one page priority matrix and a 90 day plan laid out week by week.
Deluxe
Multi-Channel Campaign Plan for Tallowwood Electrical, a fictional electrician: a campaign plan, a draft Google Ads Search campaign built without spending money, a four email follow up sequence and a monthly report template.
Expert
Full Marketing Strategy and Dashboard for Loop & Linen, a fictional business: a complete marketing strategy across channels and a reporting dashboard to track it.
Who teaches you
20 Minute Marketing writes every lesson and updates lessons when Google, Meta and the AI tools change. Tutor support from Adrian Prokopiec, who runs digital marketing for two national brands, during your 12 months of access.
Frequently asked questions
Should I do a degree, a community college certificate or a short course in digital marketing?
If the roles you want ask for a bachelor's degree, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that is typical for market research analysts, a degree or a community college route toward one is the right core choice. A self paced course from 20 Minute Marketing is a low cost way to try the work first or add platform skills alongside: Essentials costs $499, paid once, with over 50 lessons, a portfolio brief, 12 months access, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion. Find the right course for you.
Will this get me a job?
No course can promise you a job, and we will not. You get practical skills, a portfolio piece built on a fictional practice brief and a Certificate of Completion. If the roles you want list a degree as required, you will need a degree as well.
Do I need marketing experience?
No. Essentials starts from zero. You do not need a website, a business or an ad budget: the practice brief supplies one.
Is this course accredited?
No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not an accredited institution. Our courses are not accredited by any accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education, they do not carry college credit, and they have not been evaluated for an ACE credit recommendation.
Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially people starting out. It is also slow: an accredited program changes its curriculum through formal review, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.
If you need college credit or a degree, a community college or university program is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.
Can I use federal student aid for 20 Minute Marketing?
No. Federal student aid, such as Pell Grants and federal student loans, can only be used for an eligible degree or certificate program. Our courses are not one, so federal aid cannot be used for them. You do not need a loan for a $499 one-off payment, and there is a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase.
Does the Google certificate count as college credit?
Coursera says learners can earn an ACE recommendation of up to 9 college credits for the Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate. Whether a college accepts it is up to that college, so ask the college you plan to attend.
What does it cost?
Essentials costs $499, Deluxe $799 and Expert $999, paid once in US dollars. Short courses cost $79 to $149. There is no payment plan and no federal aid, and there is a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase.
Try the work before you commit
Essentials is $499, paid once, with 12 months access, tutor support and a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase.
