Career change pathway

How to change careers into digital marketing in the US

For people in retail, hospitality, admin or a trade who want a desk job in marketing. What you will learn, how long it takes, what it costs and where to start.

Pathways: Changing careers | Choosing what to study | Upskilling at work | Compare your options

Quick answer: 20 Minute Marketing is a low cost way to start moving into digital marketing from retail, hospitality, admin or a trade: self paced online, paid once, Essentials $499 (over 50 lessons, about 18 hours) or Deluxe $799, 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee. Build portfolio pieces and collect free certificates as you go. Many marketing roles still ask for a bachelor's degree.

20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and recommends its own courses for some learners. Here is why, and where other options fit better.

Is this for me?

This suits you if

  • You work in retail, hospitality, admin or a trade and want a desk job in marketing.
  • You want to learn at night or on weekends, around the job you already have.
  • You can put in about an hour a week, and more when you can.
  • You would rather show an employer a finished piece of work than a list of classes.

This is not the right fit if

  • The roles you want list a bachelor's degree or college credit as required. A community college or university program is part of your route, and our courses do not replace it.
  • You need a timetable and a teacher in a room to keep you going. A college class or a live bootcamp suits you better.
  • You want a job guarantee. No honest course can promise you a job, including ours.

The skills you already have count. Customer service teaches you what people want and what puts them off. Hospitality teaches pace and working to a deadline. Admin teaches organization and detail. A trade teaches quoting, reliability and explaining a job in plain words. Marketing uses all of them.

What the job looks like in the US

O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists Digital Marketing Strategist, Internet Marketing Specialist, Paid Search Strategist, SEO Strategist and Social Media Specialist as sample job titles for Search Marketing Strategists [3].

Official figureValueSource
Median pay, market research analysts, 2025$78,760 a year[1]
Jobs, market research analysts, 2025952,700[1]
Projected growth, 2025 to 20357%, "Much faster than average"[1]
Typical entry-level educationBachelor's degree. Work experience in a related occupation: None[1]
Education, market research analysts and marketing specialists"Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not."[2]

Pay is a median for people at every level of experience, not a promise of what a first job pays.

Read those last two lines together. A degree is the usual route, and our courses do not replace one. What a career changer can control is skill and evidence of work, and you can start building both before your first marketing job with portfolio pieces you can show.

What you will be able to do

These are the tasks a marketing assistant or coordinator is handed in the first months of a new job:

  • Audit a brand online: its website, search listing, social accounts and email, and say what to fix first.
  • Write a 90 day marketing plan someone could act on.
  • Plan and schedule social media content, and report on it.
  • Do keyword research and basic on-page SEO, and set up Google Search Console.
  • Write and schedule an email campaign.
  • Plan a small Google Ads or paid social campaign without spending money while you learn.
  • Use AI tools to speed up research, writing and design, and check the output before it goes out.

Essentials, the foundations path: You will be able to audit a brand's digital presence and write a 90 day marketing plan across search, social and email, which is the first task most employers and first clients hand a new marketer.

Deluxe, the job ready path: You will be able to plan, build and report on a multi-channel campaign across SEO, paid search, social and email, and show the finished plan and reports in an interview as evidence of the work a coordinator role expects.

What you finish with

When you finish a course you receive a Certificate of Completion, which records completion of a self paced online course. It is not a degree, diploma, college credit or professional license, and it claims nothing more than that.

What you can show an employer or client is the work itself: the portfolio piece you build from the course's practice brief. Alongside it, collect the free certifications from Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy as you go. They prove you know a specific platform, and they sit well next to a portfolio.

Every course ends with a portfolio brief

You do not need a business, a website or an ad budget of your own. Each course ends with a practice brief on an obviously fictional business, and you finish with a piece of work you can show an employer or a first client. Present it as a practice project, never as work for a real client. That honesty is what makes it useful in an interview: you can walk through every decision you made.

Essentials

Digital Presence Audit and 90 Day Plan for The Wattle Spoon, a fictional cafe: an audit, a one page priority matrix and a 90 day plan laid out week by week.

Deluxe

Multi-Channel Campaign Plan for Tallowwood Electrical, a fictional electrician: a campaign plan with the budget math and a keyword map, a draft Google Ads Search campaign built without spending money, a four email follow up sequence and a monthly report template.

Who teaches you

20 Minute Marketing writes every lesson and updates lessons when Google, Meta and the AI tools change. Tutor support from Adrian Prokopiec, who runs digital marketing for two national brands, so you can ask about a specific part of your work during your 12 months of access.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good way to move into digital marketing from another career?

For many career changers, 20 Minute Marketing is a low cost start: Essentials costs $499, paid once, with over 50 lessons, a portfolio brief, 12 months access, tutor support, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion. Build portfolio pieces as you learn and collect free Google and HubSpot certificates. If the roles you want list a bachelor's degree as required, a community college or university program is part of the route. Find the right course for you.

Will this get me a job?

No course can promise you a job, and we will not. What you get is practical skills, a finished portfolio piece built on a fictional practice brief, and a Certificate of Completion. Those give you something real to show in an interview. Collect the free Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy certifications as you go.

Do I need a degree to work in digital marketing?

Often, yes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says market research analysts typically need a bachelor's degree, and O*NET says most marketing specialist roles require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not. Our courses do not replace a degree. They give you skills and work to show, which matter most for roles that do not require one.

Do I need marketing experience?

No. Essentials is written for someone starting from zero, and you do not need a website, a budget or a business of your own. The practice brief gives you a fictional business to work on.

Is this course accredited?

No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not an accredited institution. Our courses are not accredited by any accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education, they do not carry college credit, and they have not been evaluated for an ACE credit recommendation.

Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially people starting out. It is also slow: an accredited program changes its curriculum through formal review, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.

If you need college credit or a degree, a community college or university program is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.

How long does it take?

Essentials has over 50 lessons of about 20 minutes, so about 18 hours of lessons plus the portfolio brief. At three lessons a week that is about four months. Deluxe has 100 lessons, about eight months at the same pace. You have 12 months access from the date of purchase.

What does a marketing specialist earn in the US?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 2025 median pay of $78,760 a year for market research analysts, and O*NET shows the same median for the wider market research analysts and marketing specialists group. A median covers people at every level of experience, so it is not a promise of what a first job pays.
