The 2027 US Small Business Marketing Calendar: Every Date That Matters
Nov 02, 2026Updated October 2026 · Written by Adrian Prokopiec · 9 min read
This marketing calendar 2027 from 20 Minute Marketing lists every US federal holiday, retail moment and tax date a small business should plan around next year, with the lead time to start each campaign. Every date is verified against the official source or computed from the published rule, and the rule is stated so you can check it yourself.
Most marketing calendars are a list of novelty days. National Pie Day is fun, but it has never filled a plumber’s diary or cleared a boutique’s winter stock. This one is deliberately short. It covers the dates that move money for a US small business and the dates that quietly wreck a campaign if you forget them, like the clocks changing the morning your email goes out.
Each month has a table with four columns: the date, the event, who it suits, and when to start. The lead times come from the planning rhythm in our 2026 roadmap and from running seasonal campaigns for 25 years. If you want the method for turning this into a working content plan, read how to build a content calendar for your small business alongside it.

Key takeaways
- 2027 has 11 federal holidays; three of them (Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas) fall on weekends and are observed on the nearest weekday, per the US Office of Personnel Management.
- Thanksgiving is Thursday 25 November 2027, which puts Black Friday on 26 November, Small Business Saturday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 29 November.
- The federal tax return deadline is Thursday 15 April 2027. Service businesses that sell to other businesses see spend tighten in the fortnight before it.
- Daylight saving starts Sunday 14 March and ends Sunday 7 November 2027. Check scheduled email and ad times either side of both.
- The biggest campaigns of the year need 8–10 weeks of lead time. Most small businesses give them two.
How were these 2027 dates verified?
Federal holidays come straight from the US Office of Personnel Management’s 2027 schedule, including the observed dates for holidays that land on a weekend. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day follow the rules written into Title 36 of the US Code: the second Sunday in May and the third Sunday in June. Easter is computed with the US Naval Observatory’s algorithm, which gives 28 March 2027. The tax deadline follows the IRS rule that returns are due on 15 April unless that day falls on a weekend or legal holiday. Daylight saving follows the NIST rule: second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November.
Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday have no official rule. They are retail conventions pinned to Thanksgiving, so they are marked “by convention” below. Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 and has been co-sponsored by the US Small Business Administration since 2011; it has always fallen on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Anything I could not verify or compute from a stated rule is not on this page. That rules out Super Bowl Sunday, Amazon’s sale days and state sales-tax holidays, which vary by state and year.
January 2027
January is a planning month, not a selling month, for almost everyone except gyms, accountants and anyone selling organisation. Use the quiet to set up the year: review last year’s numbers with a simple marketing ROI check, and book the big campaigns into the calendar now so they get the lead time they need.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 1 Jan | New Year’s Day (federal holiday) | Fitness, health, finance, home organisation, education | Launch “new year” offers 26–31 Dec; the resolution window closes by mid-January |
| Mon 18 Jan | Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (federal holiday) | Community-facing businesses; a day of service, not a sale | 2 weeks if you are partnering with a local nonprofit |
| All month | Annual planning and budget | Everyone | Book Q4 campaigns into the calendar now; see how much to budget |
February 2027
Valentine’s Day lands on a Sunday in 2027, which pulls restaurant bookings and gift purchases forward into the Friday and Saturday. If you take reservations or ship products, your cut-off messaging matters more than your discount.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun 14 Feb | Valentine’s Day | Restaurants, florists, jewellers, salons, gift retail, experiences | 4 weeks; ads live by 1 Feb, shipping cut-off stated by 8 Feb |
| Mon 15 Feb | Washington’s Birthday / Presidents Day (federal holiday) | Furniture, mattresses, appliances, auto; a long-weekend sale tradition | 3 weeks; the sale runs Fri 12 to Mon 15 |
March 2027
March carries two things people forget. The clocks go forward on the 14th, and Easter arrives early, on the 28th. An early Easter compresses the spring selling season for garden, home and food businesses, so start a fortnight earlier than you would in a late-Easter year.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun 14 Mar | Daylight saving begins, 2:00 am (second Sunday in March) | Anyone with scheduled emails, SMS or ad schedules | Check send times and ad schedules the week before |
| Wed 17 Mar | St Patrick’s Day | Bars, restaurants, events, apparel | 3 weeks; a midweek date means the weekend before carries the trade |
| Sun 28 Mar | Easter Sunday (computed: first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon) | Food, confectionery, garden, home, family experiences, faith-based organisations | 5 weeks; start by 20 Feb because Easter is early this year |
April 2027
Tax Day is Thursday 15 April. In the accounts I’ve managed for business-to-business services, the first two weeks of April are reliably soft: owners are with their accountant, not buying. The second half of the month is when the refund-funded purchases start, which is good news for home improvement, auto and travel.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 15 Apr | Federal individual tax return deadline (IRS: 15 April unless a weekend or legal holiday) | Accountants and bookkeepers (sell in Feb–Mar); home, auto and travel (sell after) | Accountants: 8 weeks. Everyone else: hold B2B spend until the 16th |
| Mid-April onward | Spring home and garden season | Contractors, landscapers, cleaners, garden centres | Local Services Ads and Google Business Profile updates live by 1 April; see the LSA guide |
May 2027
Mother’s Day is the second-biggest gifting moment of the year for most small retailers and the biggest for florists and restaurants. It falls on 9 May in 2027. Memorial Day closes the month and opens the summer selling season.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun 9 May | Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May, 36 U.S.C. § 142) | Florists, restaurants, salons and spas, jewellers, gift retail, photographers | 5 weeks; gift guides and booking reminders live by 1 April, shipping cut-off by 3 May |
| Mon 31 May | Memorial Day (federal holiday) | Outdoor, auto, home, travel, hospitality; the start of summer trading | 3 weeks; long-weekend sale Fri 28 to Mon 31 |
June 2027
Juneteenth falls on a Saturday in 2027, so the federal observance moves to Friday 18 June. Father’s Day is the following day. Treat them separately: one is a commemoration, the other is a gifting occasion.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 18 Jun | Juneteenth National Independence Day, observed (actual date Sat 19 Jun) | Community organisations, local events; not a discount day | 4 weeks if you are sponsoring or hosting |
| Sun 20 Jun | Father’s Day (third Sunday in June, 36 U.S.C. § 142a) | Tools and hardware, outdoor, grooming, experiences, restaurants | 4 weeks; shipping cut-off stated by 14 June |
July 2027
Independence Day is a Sunday, observed on Monday 5 July, which makes a three-day weekend and a four-day trading window from Friday 2 July. Late July is also when back-to-school begins for retailers, earlier than most owners expect.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun 4 Jul | Independence Day (federal observance Mon 5 Jul) | Hospitality, outdoor and grilling, auto, home, events | 3 weeks; sale window Fri 2 to Mon 5 |
| Late Jul – Aug | Back-to-school season (dates vary by state and district; several states run sales-tax holidays) | Apparel, stationery, electronics, tutoring, kids’ activities, family health | 6 weeks; check your state’s tax-holiday dates in June and build the campaign around them |
August 2027
There are no federal holidays in August. That makes it the best month of the year to do the unglamorous work that pays off in Q4: fix the website, clean the email list, refresh the Google Business Profile. The 20-minute local SEO audit is built for exactly this month.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| All month | Back-to-school continues | As above | Campaign already live |
| All month | Q4 preparation window | Everyone who sells in November and December | Decide your Black Friday offer, stock and ad budget by 31 August |
September 2027
Labor Day is the last big summer sale weekend and the moment buying behaviour switches from summer to “getting organised for the end of the year”. If your holiday campaign creative, landing pages and email sequences are not drafted by the end of September, you are already behind.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 6 Sep | Labor Day (federal holiday) | Furniture, mattresses, appliances, auto, outdoor clearance | 3 weeks; sale window Fri 3 to Mon 6 |
| By 30 Sep | Holiday campaign drafted: offer, creative, landing page, email sequence | Retail, e-commerce, hospitality, gift services | This is the start of the 8-week Black Friday lead time |
October 2027
Halloween is a Sunday, so costume and party purchases peak the weekend of 23–24 October and again on Saturday the 30th. The 15 October extension deadline is worth a line in your calendar too: that is when the business owners who filed late finally know their position and start spending again.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 11 Oct | Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day (federal holiday) | Retail long-weekend sales; banks and post offices closed, so allow for shipping delays | 2 weeks |
| Fri 15 Oct | Extended federal tax return deadline (six months after 15 April, per the IRS automatic extension) | Accountants; B2B services selling to owners who filed late | Accountants: 6 weeks |
| Sun 31 Oct | Halloween | Costume and party retail, confectionery, bars, family venues, pet businesses | 4 weeks; ads live by 1 Oct |
November 2027
This is the month the year is decided for most retail and e-commerce businesses. Thanksgiving is Thursday 25 November, later than in 2026, which gives you a five-week run to Christmas afterwards. The clocks also go back on 7 November; if your Black Friday emails are scheduled in UTC, check them.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun 7 Nov | Daylight saving ends, 2:00 am (first Sunday in November) | Anyone with scheduled sends or ad schedules | Check schedules the week before |
| Thu 11 Nov | Veterans Day (federal holiday) | Businesses offering veteran discounts; community-facing brands | 2 weeks; keep it respectful, not a sale event |
| Thu 25 Nov | Thanksgiving Day (federal holiday) | Grocery, restaurants and catering, travel; most retail closed | Food: 4 weeks with pre-order cut-offs by 18 Nov |
| Fri 26 Nov | Black Friday (by convention, the day after Thanksgiving) | Retail, e-commerce, services selling gift cards or annual plans | 8–10 weeks; offer locked by 31 Aug, creative by 30 Sep, ads testing in Oct |
| Sat 27 Nov | Small Business Saturday (Saturday after Thanksgiving; founded by American Express in 2010, co-sponsored by the SBA since 2011) | Every independent local business | 4 weeks; this is the one day the whole country is looking for you |
| Mon 29 Nov | Cyber Monday (by convention, the Monday after Thanksgiving) | E-commerce, digital products, online services and courses | Same campaign as Black Friday; a fresh email, not a fresh offer |
| Tue 30 Nov | Giving Tuesday (by convention, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving) | Nonprofits, and any business with a cause partnership | 4 weeks |
December 2027
Christmas Day is a Saturday, observed on Friday 24 December. The practical consequence is that the last full shipping and trading week is 13–17 December, and the final weekend before Christmas (18–19 December) will be heavy for in-store and gift-card sales.
| Date | Event | Who it suits | Lead time to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 13 – Fri 17 Dec | Last full week for standard shipping before Christmas (check your carrier’s published cut-offs in November) | E-commerce and anyone who ships | Publish your cut-off dates on the site by 1 Dec |
| Fri 24 Dec | Christmas Day observed (actual date Sat 25 Dec, federal holiday) | Everyone; gift cards and digital products are the last-minute sellers | Gift-card push from 18 Dec |
| Sun 26 – Fri 31 Dec | Post-Christmas clearance and “new year” pre-launch | Retail clearance; fitness, health, education and finance pre-selling January | Build in early December so it runs while you are off |
How far ahead should a small business plan each campaign?
The lead times in the tables are not arbitrary. They are the minimum time it takes to get an offer decided, a landing page built, creative made, an email sequence written and ads through review and out of the learning phase. Skip any one of those and the campaign launches late or launches weak. The pattern that works: the bigger the day, the earlier the offer gets locked.
| Campaign size | Examples | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1: the year-makers | Black Friday to Cyber Monday, Christmas | 8–10 weeks |
| Tier 2: gifting and seasonal | Valentine’s, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, back-to-school, Halloween | 4–6 weeks |
| Tier 3: long weekends | Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day | 2–3 weeks |
| Tier 4: operational dates | Daylight saving changes, tax deadlines, shipping cut-offs | 1 week to check settings; no campaign needed |
One practical note on email. Our three essential email sequences are evergreen, but every Tier 1 and Tier 2 date deserves its own short sequence: an announcement, a reminder and a last-chance. Write all three in one sitting when you lock the offer, then schedule them. Deliverability drops when half the country sends on the same morning, so warm up your sends in the weeks before rather than going from silence to daily.
How to use this calendar in 20 minutes a month
You do not need a marketing department to run a seasonal calendar. You need one 20-minute session on the first working day of each month, and the discipline to look two months ahead rather than at the month you are in.
| 1 | Look two months ahead (5 minutes). Open the table for the month after next. Circle the one or two dates that fit your customers. Ignore the rest. Three campaigns done well beat twelve done badly. |
| 2 | Lock the offer in one sentence (5 minutes). “Book a Mother’s Day facial before 3 May and get a $20 gift card for her.” If you cannot write it in a sentence, it is not ready to market. Our guide to creating an offer customers say yes to has the structure. |
| 3 | Book the work backwards from the date (5 minutes). Using the lead time in the table, put three entries in your own calendar: offer locked, assets built, campaign live. The Google Business Profile post and the email go in the same slot. |
| 4 | Check this month’s operational dates (5 minutes). Clocks changing, a holiday that closes the post office, a tax deadline. Adjust scheduled sends and ad schedules. This step is the one that saves you from the 3 am email. |
If you would rather learn the whole system than piece it together, our digital marketing short courses cover seasonal campaigns across email, social, Google Ads and your website, one 20-minute lesson at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Black Friday in 2027?
Black Friday 2027 is Friday 26 November, the day after Thanksgiving, which the US Office of Personnel Management lists as Thursday 25 November 2027. Small Business Saturday follows on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 29 November. Black Friday has no official rule; it is a retail convention tied to Thanksgiving.
What are the 2027 US federal holidays?
There are 11: New Year’s Day (Fri 1 Jan), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Mon 18 Jan), Washington’s Birthday (Mon 15 Feb), Memorial Day (Mon 31 May), Juneteenth (observed Fri 18 Jun), Independence Day (observed Mon 5 Jul), Labor Day (Mon 6 Sep), Columbus Day (Mon 11 Oct), Veterans Day (Thu 11 Nov), Thanksgiving (Thu 25 Nov) and Christmas (observed Fri 24 Dec).
When is Mother’s Day 2027 and Father’s Day 2027?
Mother’s Day 2027 is Sunday 9 May and Father’s Day 2027 is Sunday 20 June. Both dates are set by US law: Title 36 of the US Code designates the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Plan four to five weeks of lead time for either.
When does daylight saving time start and end in 2027?
Daylight saving time begins at 2:00 am on Sunday 14 March 2027 and ends at 2:00 am on Sunday 7 November 2027. The rule, per NIST, is the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Check any scheduled emails, SMS or ad schedules in the week before each change.
How far in advance should I plan a Black Friday campaign?
Allow eight to ten weeks. Lock the offer, stock and budget by the end of August, have the landing page, creative and email sequence drafted by the end of September, and run your ads at a low budget through October so they are out of the learning phase before costs rise in November.
Is Easter early in 2027?
Yes. Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, computed with the US Naval Observatory’s algorithm as the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon. That is about a week earlier than 2026, so spring and Easter campaigns for food, garden and home businesses should start by late February.
